USA World Cup For Dummies (Like Me!) :-) June 13, 2010

I was having a tough time trying to figure out how to get behind the US Mens Soccer Team because, quite frankly, I couldn’t figure out where to start.  I did a lil digging this morning and gathered these notes.  HTH, but don’t shoot the messenger especially when they admit ignorance predicated the message. 😉

USA is competing in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Group C.  There are 53 teams competing for the World Cup.  After two preliminary rounds, 20 teams play in five groups of four. The group winners qualify for the FIFA World Cup.  At this time, I believe there are 32 teams competing in the World Cup separated into Groups from A thru H with 4 teams in each Group.  Most of the world’s most economically powerful nations are competing for the World Cup.  The teams that writers believe to be the favorites for winning the 2010 World Cup are (in order):  Brazil(1), Italy(2), Spain(3), Germany(4), and Argentina(5).  The match schedules are already set and I believe the match seedings are determined by a point system.  The final, championship match is scheduled for Sunday, July 11th in Johnannesburg, South Africa.

I could be wrong, but I believe FIFA awarded 3 of its 32 competing World Cup berths to CONCACAF.  USA is a member of CONCACAF along with 40 other nations.  Some of the other more popular CONCACAF nations are:  Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago and more.

USA was awarded the top FIFA CONCACAF berth.  The other 2 berths went to Mexico and Honduras.  USA’s most recent victories in the Fourth Round of the CONCACAF qualifiers were over:  El Salvador (Sep-2009), Honduras (Jun-2009) and Trinidad & Tobago (Apr-2009). USA’s record for the Fourth Round was 6-2-2 (Wins-Losses-Ties).  USA’s team is coached by Bob Bradley who has been written as being a "serious", "intense", passionate man.  (I like him already!)  USA’s top goal scorer is named Landon Donovan who has been described in print as a "surfer dude". (I definitely like him already!!!)
